Buoyed by their first home win of the season, Whitchurch go in search of another one when they welcome Worcester Wanderers to Edgeley Park in rugby’s Midlands One West on Saturday.
The mid-table Reds hope home advantage will prove key once more against a Wanderers side who have experienced a mixed start to the campaign.
“They’re running quite well,” said Whitchurch president John Gregory.
“They had a good win at Ludlow last weekend but lost at home to Old Halesonians a week earlier.
“I think it will be a very close encounter but with home advantage hopefully we’ll have enough to get another win.”
Gregory added Whitchurch played some decent rugby to get the better of Camp Hill 32-24 last weekend, the Reds not only picking up five welcome league points but also sealing a place in the semi-finals of the North Mids Cup as the game was played as a double header.
“There was quite a lot of good rugby played considering the conditions and how hot it was,” stressed the president.
“By running in four tries, we also managed to get a bonus point.”
Whitchurch trailed early on, visiting outside half Ian Briggs converting his own try, but the north Shropshire men responded strongly to open up a 22-7 advantage by the interval.
Full back Henry Hockenhall, back row man Tom Hares and second row Ollie Bates all crossed, with Danny Nicholas adding two conversions and also kicking a penalty.
After the break, Briggs weighed in with a penalty to take the Camp Hill tally into double figures, but the Reds then pulled away to lead 32-10, Hockenhall grabbing his second try of the game which was again converted by Nicholas who also landed another penalty.
Camp Hill made the scoreline more respectable by hitting back with two converted tries from Briggs and wing Steve Leach, Briggs adding the extras each time, but Whitchurch were never in danger of relinquishing their hold on the game.
