Fiery fun at festival

The ninth annual Welshampton Festival of Fire drew a crowd of around 1,500 people who flocked to the village to see a 40 foot tall wooden man being burned to the ground.

The event, which took place last Saturday, included music, dance, acrobats, fireworks and poetry and has been hailed a success by organisers.

The finale was the burning of the main structure, dubbed the History Man, which went up in flames at the end of an hour-long show.

A 100-strong team of villagers and volunteers, including people from Ireland, Cumbria and Oxford, helped to make the event possible.

But question marks have been raised over the future of the event after it was revealed the Welshampton Bonfire Committee may call it a day, as reported in the Chronicle recently.

Richard Jones, bonfire committee chairman, said: “We had a debrief meeting on Sunday and it’s very much up in the air. We made £2,500 and it cost about £5,000 to put on.

“The actual event went very well, it was really good and people seemed to enjoy it. We had a good crowd of volunteers including some from southern Ireland. We all pulled together really well. The History Man is the tallest we’ve ever made.”
