Food and cheer on tap at first festival

Wem welcomed food and drink lovers to sample a range of culinary delights and more than 30 traditional ales and ciders at the launch of a joint venture which organisers hope to make an annual event.

The mouth-watering produce was on display at Wem Beer and Food Festival last weekend, held at Lower Lacon Caravan Park and Wem Town Hall.

Civic leaders said the festival, funded by Wem Town Council in conjunction with Lower Lacon Caravan Park and Wem Town Hall, was quite well attended. Produce on display was predominantly from the county and border areas.

Wem Mayor Councillor Mandy Meakin said: “The town hall was reasonably busy when I popped in and there seemed plenty of people around the town.

“It is the first year of the event so it can take some time for it to get going. There has been a beer festival at the caravan park for some time now, but this is the first joint venture with the town hall and I think it is a very good idea. Hopefully we can develop the event and see it grow in future years.”

Clive Shingler, organiser of the event and one of the partners of the caravan park, said: “In 2008 we held our first festival which was well supported, so another was held in 2009. This year with the start-up of Northern Marches Food Festivals we were asked to change to the Wem Beer and Food Festival to market it with the other festivals in the area.”
