Bowen content after Whitchurch hit back

Whitchurch skipper Simon Bowen was happy with his side’s efforts after getting back on track in the Birmingham League division two with a comfortable six-wicket success over struggling Tamworth.

After the previous week’s loss to Cannock following a late collapse, the Heath Road men hit back to consolidate in mid-table.

“We threw it away the previous week so Saturday’s win was just what we needed,” said Bowen.

“There was a little bit in the wicket, but I was pleased with the way we bowled and the way we finished them off.

“I’m quite happy where we are in the table, it would be nice to go up a few more places, but the important thing is that we don’t drop down at all.”

The bowlers set up the victory after dismissing their Tamworth visitors for a modest 124, opener Neil Orton providing chief resistance with 36.

Maisam Hasnain led the way with 4-20 while there were three wickets apiece for Mark Tooze and Amjaad Ali Khan.

Despite the early loss of Hasnain and Ian Gregory, Whitchurch had no further alarms as skipper Bowen steadied the ship with 31, but it was Richard Oliver who proved the mainstay with an unbeaten 77, taking his tally to 557 league runs for the season.

Boosted by the performance, Whitchurch now face a tough trip to third placed Berkswell on Saturday, but can take positives from the fact that they won when the two sides met earlier in the campaign.

WHITCHURCH II – who host Berkswell II on Saturday – lost ground after going down by five wickets at Brockhampton in reserve division three.Opting to bat first, the north Shropshire side found the going tough as they were bowled out for 162 in 44 overs.

The total was built largely on No 3 James Wojda’s 57 while Jack Hart added 32 down the order.Brockhampton paced their reply well in an innings which saw all five wickets shared out among the bowlers.
