Town’s payment machine closes

Residents in Wem have been left with nowhere to pay their bills after the closure of the only PayPoint outlet in the town.

The outlet was located in Simply Drinks, High Street, but the shop was forced to close last week after its owners, The Wine Cellar, went into administration.

One Wem resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “Simply Drinks was the only outlet for people to pay their bills with PayPoint in the town.

“You can pay some bills in the Co-op and in the Post Office but some you can’t. The machine at Simply Drinks broke down last year for months and people had to travel to Whitchurch to pay their bills.”

However residents may not have to wait for too long before a replacement service is available. Tom Nutt, for PayPoint, said: “The Simply Drinks is being taken over by by Ebor Costcutter and the PayPoint terminal has continued in operation so people will be able to top up as normal.”

Nobody from Ebor Costcutter was available for comment as the Chronicle went to press.
