Historic parade to mark Air Corps’ anniversary

Air cadetsOne of the largest gatherings of youth organisations in Whitchurch’s history will meet for a parade to mark the 25th anniversary of the town’s squadron of the Air Training Corps.

Hundreds of youths representing 79 (Whitchurch) Squadron of the ATC and other organisations including cubs, scouts, guides and army cadets, will parade through the town on February 13, attend a commemorative service at St Alkmund’s Church and a reception at Whitchurch Market Hall.

It’s being held to mark the formation of the ATC squadron, which came into being on February 11 1985 and has since been attended by hundreds of youths in the area.

The event will also be attended by the High Sheriff of Shropshire Anna Turner, who will take the salute of the parade jointly with the Regional Commandant of Wales and West Region Air Cadets Group Captain Richard Allen.

The parade will start at 2.30pm and will run along Green End and High Street, while the church service will start at 3pm and the civic reception shortly after 4pm. A disco for the cadets and other organisations will start at 5.30pm, while the parade will be led by the cadet band of 1119 (Shrewsbury) Squadron ATC.

A raffle is also being held to help fund the event, with prizes up for grabs including an Air Experience flight over the local countryside.

Flight Lieutenant Chris Simmons, adjutant for 79 Squadron, said: “This will be the biggest gathering of youth organisations ever in Whitchurch. During the day 79 Squadron will be presented with and will be parading their new squadron banner.”
