Reds aim to continue purple patch

On-song Whitchurch had few problems notching a fifth straight win in Midlands One West after seeing off Sutton Coldfield 37-12 – and are now targeting more of the same at mid-table Leamington Spa on Saturday.

The Reds, who remain in fourth spot, continue to fire on all cylinders and, with confidence high, the Edgeley Park men are determined to keep moving in the right direction.

“It was another good performance and Jimmy Mullock was probably the outstanding performer,” said Whitchurch president John Gregory. “Going to Leamington is another good chance to continue the run and we just want to keep it going.”

Whitchurch, who have pencilled in their North Midlands Cup quarter- final at home to Malvern for the following Saturday, had few problems maintaining their 100 per cent record on home soil this term as they made it five wins out of five in front of their own loyal followers.

The Reds ran in five tries, among them a try of the season contender from Mullock, and there was no stopping the in-form hosts once they opened up a 19-0 lead early in the second half.

Winger Tom Crank opened the scoring with a 13th minute try before the forwards drove over, Robin Le Cocq getting the final touchdown, for a try converted by Danny Nicholas.

After the interval centre Mike Gardner, stand-in captain in the continued absence of the injured Chris Hares, went over for a try converted by Nicholas, who then landed a penalty just after Sutton had put their first points on the board via a try from Harry Pendleton.

Crank crossed for his second touchdown before Mullock applied the finishing touch to a flowing move which saw the ball pass through many pairs of hands, a try president Gregory rated Whitchurch’s best of the season so far.

The visitors replied with a converted try from Richard Watts but fittingly Whitchurch had the final word with Nicholas kicking another penalty.

Another bonus for Whitchurch was the appearance of veteran former skipper Phil Mullock, now 41, as a sub for the last 10 minutes. He slotted in at scrum half for his first senior outing this season.
