Tom’s winning way with words

A youngster from Wem has followed in his sister’s footsteps by being honoured for a special achievement at an awards ceremony.

Tom Carter, 11, was one of the winners at Wem and District Rotary Young Achievers’ Awards – emulating his sister Stacey’s success, who won an award in 2002 for being ‘a good all-rounder’.

Tom, who attends Clive Primary School, was chosen by staff for the progress he has made in his speech therapy. When he started the school he had problems talking, but has made significant progress  and can now speak confidently in front of an audience.

Mary Lucas, headteacher at Clive Primary School, said: “The changes in Tom’s speech since he joined the school has been tremendous. He is now a confident young man who can stand up in front of a large audience and deliver a speech.”

Seven children from six district schools were given awards and the overall winner this year was Adam Northwood, 11, from St Peter’s School, Wem, who won the award for improvements he has made in his speech. He was presented with a trophy in memory of Rotarian Paul Harris, who died last year.

Children from primary schools in Whixall, Shawbury, Myddle and Newtown also took part in the event held recently at St Peter’s School.
