Ellesmere’s new Tesco store – bringing with it the promise of 150 jobs – is set to open a week ahead of schedule.
The store is part of a multi-million pound project to redevelop the town’s former creamery site, with the 20,000 sq ft site due to open on August 3.
The scheme will also see a café, restaurant and care home built, as well as housing.
Lincoln McMullan, chairman of Ellesmere Chamber of Commerce, met developers last Friday to change the date on the signs around the town stating when the store will open.
“I am sure news that the Tesco site is due to open a week ahead of schedule will be welcomed by the people of Ellesmere,” he said. “We hear a lot about projects being delayed, especially in the current economic times, so the fact that this one will finish earlier than planned is terrific.”
Felix Gummer, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, confirmed the store was due to open on August 3.
Meanwhile, jobseekers in Ellesmere will be able to ‘check out’ the new jobs as Tesco joins forces with Jobcentre Plus to recruit staff.
Jobcentre Plus is helping to fill the vacancies through a Local Employment Partnership. The store is encouraging applications from the local community, particularly people who may be finding it difficult to return to work, such as lone parents, people with disabilities or health conditions, and the long-term unemployed.
There will be a range of positions available with opportunities for both full and part-time staff. Successful applicants will be given full training prior to the store opening.
Anyone interested in the jobs should contact the recruitment team on 01691 623670 between 9am and 6pm Monday to Friday, or they can collect an application form from the Jobcentre Plus offices in Oswestry and Whitchurch.
Completed application forms should be returned to the local Jobcentre and interviewing will start in early June.
