A ‘popular’ family-run business in Ellesmere which has been serving fish and chips to people for 30 years has been put up for sale – potentially leaving only one fish and chip shop in the town.
Mario’s Plaice, Victoria Street, is run by Mario Georgiou, and has been put on the market because his wife suffers from health problems. The only other chippy in Ellesmere is Shropshire Fish Bar & Southern Fried Chicken on High Street.
Mario, who lives in the town, took over the business in 1995 and says he is sad to be selling up. “The business is run by my wife and I, but unfortunately she has health problems and I will have to look after her.
“We have really enjoyed running a fish and chip shop in Ellesmere. It has been popular among the locals, although we have found things have got harder with an increase in competition.
“I am sure the business will re-open as a fish and chip shop.”
Lincoln McMullan, chairman of Ellesmere Chamber of Commerce, said: “Marios always seemed to be very busy and I am surprised it has been put up for sale. If it shuts it will leave only one fish and chip shop in the town, but I am sure people looking to buy it will want to re-open it as one.”
A spokesperson for Barbers said: “This is a busy business, which is well known within the town and has a steady regular trade from traditional fish and chips and kebabs.
“The business is fully equipped and is only offered for sale due to retirement on health grounds.”
The leasehold premises is on sale with agents Barbers for £67,500. The majority of fixtures and fittings are included in the sale. For more information contact Barbers on 01952 221220.
