A pub in Wem is set to re-open its doors next month after being shut for almost a year.
The Albion, on Aston Street, closed without warning last May leaving townfolk without their local. It was the only pub in the town centre which served food.
It will re-open within the next few weeks with town leaders describing it as fantastic news.
Pauline Dee, mayor of Wem, said: “The re-opening of the pub is great news for the town, especially as it has been closed for so long.
“It is in a great location and will make the town centre vibrant again. With the Sweet Pea Show coming up in June, I am hopeful it will encourage more visitors and make it a great event.
“It was a fantastic pub beforehand and I am sure the new owners will make it a success.”
David Granger, chairman of Wem Chamber of Commerce, said: “It is fantastic news for Wem and an open business is better than a closed one.”
In August, Wem town councillors raised their concerns with Punch Taverns about the number of pubs in the town which had closed, and asked them to reconsider their actions.
Some councillors felt the trend could lead to more anti-social behaviour and drinking in the streets.
Jo Sandall, media relations manager for Punch Taverns, said: “We are delighted to confirm that a local couple have been recruited to take on the lease at The Albion.
“We anticipate that the pub will re-open in May and look forward to working closely with the new licensees to help them build a successful pub business that is a credit to the local community.”
The new licensees were unavailable for comment as the Chronicle went to press.
