Plans are afoot to celebrate Ellesmere’s place on a famous walking route with a monument for weary travellers and tourists alike to sit and pose for photos.
The town is in several guidebooks for the journey from Land’s End to John o’Groats – the traversal of the whole of the island of Great Britain from southwest to northeast.
The distance from Land’s End to John o’Groats, is 603 miles or 874 miles by road.
Walkers going through the Peak District can go either by an eastern route through Staffordshire or a western route across the Severn Bridge then by the Offa’s Dyke Path and the Maelor Way. This includes the Llangollen Canal which passes through Ellesmere and the meres between bridges 54 and 57 and includes a short arm towards the town.
Lincoln McMullan, chairman of the Chamber of Trade, said: “We want people to know that Ellesmere is on the route. We’re looking at putting in a steel sculpture of a tandem bike in front of an Ellesmere sign so that people can sit on it for a photo. We want to promote the town further to visitors.”
