The three artists who will be tasked with the job of giving Wem a cultural makeover have been announced, the Chronicle can exclusively reveal.
Members of the Better Welcome For Wem Project Steering Group have appointed Al Smith, who has been given the Mapping Wem illustrated map project, Linda Barlow who will create flags and banners based around Celebrating Wem and Jenny Foord who will develop town trails for the topic Walking Wem.
A spokesperson from the project said: “All three of these artists have lived and worked in Wem for years – which should greatly benefit the project. They also have a very credible track record in the area of public commissions – both regionally and nationally.
“Additionally, they were all previously involved in the ‘Making Wem: what makes Wem the creative place it is’ community arts project that took place in 2003.
The Better Welcome Project is also being supported by Thomas Adams School and Wem Town Council.
Ms Barlow, who designed one of the Super Lamb Banana sculptures which graced Liverpool this summer, is a textile artist who has lived in Wem for 20 years. She has exhibited work all over the UK.
She has also designed pieces locally for North Shropshire District Council and Shropshire County Council. Her work can be viewed at www.axisweb.org/artist/lindabar low
