‘We Mean Business’ campaign

Traders mean business

People in Whitchurch are backing the Chronicle’s We Mean Business campaign to beat the credit crunch with the help of a new A to Z shopping guide.

The Whitchurch Action Group (WAG) – an affiliation of the Chamber of Commerce – has produced a free A5 guide aimed at supporting local traders who are struggling in the current economic climate.

The guide will feature a list of business types, shop names, and contact details. It is being funded by North Shropshire District Council and is part of an on-going process to highlight the diversity of shops available in the town and to encourage a ‘shop local’ approach when making spending decisions.

Andy Bettison, director of WAG, said: “The Chronicle’s business campaign supports what we are trying to achieve and anything that encourages people to shop locally and beat the credit crunch is a good thing.”

Little Acorns

A turn-of-the-century village school house will become a haven for children once again as it is set to re-open as a day nursery.

The new business, called The Little Acorns, will bring between 8-10 jobs to the area over the next few months with three vacancies currently being advertised.

The building at Quina Brook, near Wem, is believed to have been empty since the 1960s, but it is now set to open in January after a £30,000 overhaul with space for 35 children aged two to five.

It was taken over by business partners Melanie Lambert, from Wem, and Susan Jenkins, from Whixall, who both have young children of their own and qualifications in early years child care.

Mrs Lambert said she had seen the Chronicle’s We Mean Business campaign and contacted the paper about the new nursery.

Despite the credit crunch she believes they have identified a gap in the market in providing child care which does not shut during school holidays and which is also available on Saturdays.

There are plans to open a baby wing in January.

The new nursery is holding two open days tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday between 10am and 12noon and 4pm and 6pm.
