A campaign by staff at Wem Swimming Centre to raise £5,000 to have a pool cover installed by Christmas has been delayed by a ‘few years’ due to a lack of public donations.
At the start of the year staff hoped to raise money for a new cover to save on energy costs in heating the pool, but are more than £3,000 off reaching their target.
The Friends of Wem Swimming Centre have held a number of fundraising events during the year to boost their campaign, including coffee mornings and quiz nights, but a lack of donations thought to be due to the credit crunch has meant hopes of installing it have been delayed.
“It is very disappointing,” said Olwyn Chapman, member of the Friends of Wem Swimming Centre.
The Chronicle’s successful Sink or Swim campaign helped save the pool in 2005. If anyone would like to make a donation to the Friends of Wem Swimming Centre visit http://charities.everyclick.com
