A new cookery course is helping consumers get their teeth stuck into the credit crunch – by teaching them to live healthily and economically.
Healthy Living, Healthy Eating is being run at the Hospital Chapel Centre, on Alport Road, in Whitchurch, and has gone down well with budding chefs.
Kath Goodchild, from the centre, said: “So far it has proved very popular with between eight and 16 people attending each week. People can drop in and drop out of the sessions, we just ask that they let us know they are coming.”
So far those taking part have learned how to eat what is in season as it is usually cheaper and in plentiful supply. Skills being taught include buying cheaper cuts of meat, cooking fish, using up leftovers and buying own label goods.
Nutritionist Sylvie Jackson, who is in charge of the course, said: “I’ve been running cookery courses at the centre for four years and each time I try to come up with something a bit different.
“Since everyone is feeling the pinch I thought it would be a good idea to run a course on cutting costs. It’s also a bit of fun and a social event as well.”
The classes take place each Wednesday from 10am to 12pm. Each class costs £2.
There are plans to have further courses on the run- up to Christmas and in the new year.
