Play cancelled after death

An amateur dramatics play due to be performed in Ellesmere was cancelled after the death of a popular member of the cast.

Colleen Cubberly had been treading the boards with Ellesmere Amateur Dramatic Society for many years, but died at her home in the town on July 28 just five days after celebrating her 83rd birthday.

Last weekend society members were scheduled to perform their latest production Light and Dark, but the play, which also featured her daughter and club secretary Lydia Tabbron, was called off.

Mrs Cubberly was involved in many other clubs in the town and also volunteered in the hospital charity shop once a week. She was a keen letter writer and wrote to the council over concerns about over-development of the Mere.

Mrs Tabbron said: “She was involved with the WI, senior citizens’ club, Women’s Royal British Legion, and she took part in plays and pantomimes.”

As well as Lydia, Mrs Cubberly had a son Danny, five grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren.

Dorothy Bussey, who knew Mrs Cubberly through the drama group, said: “I would always see her on her bike, she was a nice person who always offered to help people.”

Mrs Cubberly’s funeral was held at Pentrebychan Crematorium, Wrexham, on Monday, August 4. At the service donations were made to Marie Curie Cancer Care and Ellesmere Community Nursing Home.
