What’s in store?

Store officials are hoping to start work on the new Tesco store in Ellesmere, which is set to form a major part of the town’s development, within the next few months and have applied to North Shropshire District Council planners to remove a building condition within the application to allow this.

In April this year Tesco bosses announced they had bought 20,000 sq ft of land on the Wharf site which will create around 150 jobs.

In May plans for the supermarket were twice thrown out by NSDC after they were deemed unsuitable as the Wharf is in a conservation area.

Rian Huxley, a spokesperson for NSDC, said the plans would be put forward as a delegated decision on October 15 and consultation letters have  been sent out. Two letters have already been returned.

Felix Gummer, a spokesperson for Tesco, said: “We are extremely excited about these new plans and hope they meet with the council’s satisfaction.”

Geoff Elner, Mayor of Ellesmere, said: “We would support Tesco, we want it built and developed quickly, but it has got to be built tastefully.”
