‘Top class’ flats for Ellesmere

An application has been submitted to build ‘top class’ flats and a restaurant in Ellesmere town centre, which agents say will lead to jobs being created.

The flats will be on the site of the Rennet Works on Victoria Street near J. C. Dyke Supplies, a building and DIY merchants.

The restaurant will be in the basement below the DIY store which would remain open on the ground floor.

As part of the development the DIY merchants would be extended and the car park doubled in size. No cost estimates for the scheme have been revealed. J. C. Dyke Supplies is a family-run business which has been operating for more than 20 years.

It has shops in Ellesmere, Oswestry and Welshpool, and the one in Ellesmere has been open for more than 10 years.

Paul Whale, a spokesman for the agents Casely and Whale from Gobowen, said the flats would be of a high standard.

He said: “The apartments would be suitable for retired people or those who want to live in the town centre. ”

Mr Whale added that the restaurant would be franchised.

Colin Dyke said that he has developed flats before but that this would be his first restaurant.

He added: “The Rennet Works is a lovely old building.

“There will also be a bistro area outside.”

Lincoln McMullan, chairman of Ellesmere Chamber of Commerce, said he was glad the old building would be renovated.

A decision is expected to be made by North Shropshire District Council by September 9.
