Old town hall given new life

An old town hall falling into disrepair is being given a breath of new life with the introduction of a ‘classy’ restaurant and bar.

Residents and councillors have been trying to restore Ellesmere Old Town Hall on the High Street which has been empty since the previous tenants moved out 10 months ago.

Last Friday, owners Bowen Son and Watson, revealed the hall was now available to rent and may be transformed into a ‘classy’ restaurant, bar or cafe.

Eddie Bowen, managing agent of Bowen Son and Watson, said the project to improve the buildings was going out to tender and that he would like to see it turned into a restaurant with the possibility of chairs and tables being placed on the pavement outside the premises.

He said there was also space in the building for dances and wedding parties.

Town councillors say they have received many comments from residents concerned about the state of the building.

Since its clock stopped working it has been allowed to fall into disrepair.

The costs of doing up the hall are being kept under wraps as bosses believe the final figures will depend on what specific improvements will be carried out.

Mr Bowen said: “We will be trying to find a tenant for the old town hall. I think it would be very good for Ellesmere as it will provide jobs and encourage tourists.”

Geoff Elner, Ellesmere town mayor, said: “The old town hall is privately owned and falling into disrepair.

“It is such a shame as it is a lovely historical building. We want it to look nice.”
