Fears are growing after a planning application was lodged for 37 affordable homes in a small village.
The site at Whitebrook Meadow in Prees has previously been earmarked for housing but councillors are angry the volume of homes is greater than previously agreed.
Proposals for eight two-bedroom apartments, 15 two-bedroom houses and 14 three-bedroom houses, with parking and roads, were submitted to North Shropshire District Council’s planning department last Thursday.
The scheme by Shropshire Homes would include houses for shared ownership and rented accommodation, and bosses are hopeful they will be on site by the autumn.
Nearby residents have contacted the parish council over the plans and officials plan to call a public meeting, which they will invite the developers to attend.
Ian Henderson, chairman of Prees Parish Council, said: “All I can say at the moment is we have just received the proposal and if we can set up an open meeting for the residents then that is what we will do.
“It will be for people to hear in more detail about the building and running of the affordable housing.
“I have had one or two people who have spoken to me on behalf of others about the site.
“The application has a higher density than we had agreed to previously. If there is a concern it is to do with the higher density of developments and higher proportion of affordable homes – 37 homes is a lot for Prees.”
Andrew Sheldon, land manager for Shropshire Homes, said he would consult over the application, but believed the plans would help the local economy.
“We had an initial meeting with the planning officer in the summer so now the application will go out for formal consultation,” he said.
“We have worked in conjunction with the planning authority in the design of the units to create a design that fits with the existing urban site.”
He said building work would be carried out by traders throughout Shropshire so the influx of people to Prees would help the shops and the economy.
