Vandals close public toilets

Council officials want to install CCTV cameras in Wem after vandals closed the public toilets again.

Councillors said they were ‘fed up’ after discovering the gents had to be shut for a second time on Monday after the door had been broken.

Now North Shropshire District Council bosses are looking into putting security cameras nearby.

Town councillors will be discussing the idea with police at a meeting tonight.

Peggy Carson, town and district councillor, said this week residents and tourists had been complaining about the closures.

She said she had been campaigning for more than five years for vandal-proof loos.

The toilets were first closed back in January before re-opening during Easter only to be shut again. The ladies has since been closed for the past eight weeks after vandals destroyed a door.

Cllr Carson said: “We are fed up with all the complaints we have received.”

Rian Huxley, spokesperson for NSDC, said they were working with the town council and police on the matter.
