Accident blackspot speed limit

An accident blackspot which claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy will see its speed limit slashed from 60mph to 30mph.

The news comes a week after another teenager was knocked down at the treacherous spot outside Walford College.

Residents had been seeking a cut in the speed limit after a number of accidents there. Shropshire County Council will meet later this week to discuss the move.

Recent accidents include the fatal crash in which Jonathan Humphreys, from Baschurch, died after the Vauxhall Corsa in which he was a passenger was in a collision with a BMW in Huffley Lane, near Bomere Heath, in January. A further seven people were injured in the incident.

And a teenage girl is recovering after being hit by a car outside the college last Wednesday. The 17-year-old, a student at the college, received stitches at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Other crash victims include a motorcyclist who suffered back injuries after colliding with a car in February last year and three people who escaped unhurt when their car overturned on a bend in November 2006.

Residents had also called for new pavements and re-siting of a bus stop. Although the bus stop has since been moved and a flashing speed warning put in place, the pavement project has been abandoned due to insufficient cash. But Baschurch parish councillors have vowed to continue to lobby for the project. Consultation is due to begin in the autumn.
