A runner will be pounding the pavements in the Big Apple to raise money for charity and celebrate a birthday milestone.
Sara Rogers wanted to do something to mark her 40th birthday in January so she put her name down for the New York marathon on November 2. She is using her run to raise £1,200 for Cystic Fibrosis because a friend’s son has the condition. The race will be a quadruple celebration, as in addition to turning 40 Sara’s husband Billy recently turned 50 and her two friends, Linda and Mike Bate, who will be supporting her in New York, are both celebrating their 60th year.
To train Sara has been running on a treadmill and with the Whitchurch Whippets. She runs around 20 miles a week but will increase this to 50 or 60 miles nearer the day.
Sara, from Whitchurch, started running four years ago to lose weight and managed to drop four stone.
Although this is her first marathon she has run half marathons in the past including one in Prague.
Sara said: “I wanted to do something I’d never done before and will probably never do again. I’m excited, but it will be hard work.
“I’d like to do it within five hours,” she added.
