Out to Africa!

Two teachers have stepped out of the classroom to head to Kenya to help orphans run their own farm.sd2693205p23-kenya30.jpg

Lynne Edwards and Ben Williams, from Thomas Adams School in Wem, flew out last Friday to spend half term week at two partnership schools near Kisumu on Lake Victoria.

They are being accompanied by Lynne’s husband, Keith, who is part of the Zest for Life partnership, which sells roses to raise funds for the Kenyan schools in memory of Ross Jones, a Thomas Adams student, who was killed in a road accident in 2005.

The trip is part of an ongoing partnership between the schools which started in 2004 with the support of the British Council.

Students at Thomas Adams learn enterprise skills by fundraising for Miriu Mixed Secondary School and Innis Primary School, an initiative which has seen 40 children a year given a chance to complete their secondary education.

Next month, three Thomas Adams students, Ben Cornish, Harriett Ikin and Becky Towers, will be making a trip to Kenya to help set up a student exchange and teach sports and English.

Ben and Lynne will be helping the students to plant crops such as mangoes and also to buy two hybrid goats to provide milk for the students.

To buy a Zest for Life rose telephone Karen Jones on 07914 757799 or Julie Angel on 01939 237000.
