New village centre shelved

Plans to knock down a village hall and use the profits from the sale of the land to invest in a new community centre have been shelved.

Penley Village Hall was due for demolition with the money to be given to the Rainbow Centre which is building new premises in the village.

Under the arrangement, centre staff were set to allow residents to use the hall in exchange for the money they would invest.

But although the village hall will no longer be knocked down the Rainbow Centre will still be built with the tendering process being launched this week.

Residents have now vowed to go it alone and attempt to get their own hall built.

The centre, which opened 14 years ago, is currently on an industrial estate where it offers day care and respite support including health support, advocacy, and counselling services.

Work is due to start in July following six years of fundraising and grant applications, including a successful lottery bid by staff to raise more than £600,000 to build the new premises. It will be next to the family hospital on the main road through Penley.

Alison Moser, from the village hall committee, said: “We’ve had to pull out of the project. The Rainbow Centre refused to give us the accommodation we needed. There were some very difficult decisions. We hope the Rainbow Centre is successful.”

She added that the committee would now be trying to build a new hall for residents.

On Friday (May 16) Joan Lowe, mayor of Wrexham, visited the Rainbow Centre to meet with staff and look at the designs.

Despite the village hall committee no longer being involved in the project Abigail Tudor, centre manager, said the vision for the centre is to extend current services and provide facilities for the wider community.

The centre is due to be completed in March next year.
