Larger classes for rising numbers

Pupil admission numbers to two north Shropshire secondary schools are set to rise at the start of the new school year in September – a move which will mean larger class sizes.

Lakelands School, Ellesmere, is due to take delivery of two new information technology rooms from September, increasing the school capacity from 551 to 570 and admission numbers to 114.

Education officers said as the school has four forms of entry, the most appropriate admission figures would be 116, bringing an average class size to 29 compared with the present 27. The school governors have accepted the 116 figure.

A spokesman for the school said: “The new intake would be in year seven. We’ve got two new suites built and we’ve extended the staff room.”

At Thomas Adams School in Wem governors have asked for the admission numbers to rise from 189 to 203 – due to internal changes in the use of accommodation. Some places would be reserved exclusively for boarding pupils.

Neil Hemming, headteacher at Thomas Adams, said: “As a school we’re over subscribed and 203 is probably a sensible admission number.”
