Grant helps Polish translations

A centre in Whitchurch will be offering translation services to Polish people after receiving a  £3,000 grant.

Whitchurch Hospital Chapel Centre in Claypit Street received the grant from North Shropshire District Council to help them engage with ethnic minorities through language and IT services.

John Dodson, chairman of the centre, worked in Eastern Europe before his retirement and said he could relate to people coming to a new country without speaking the language.

The centre’s staff have been meeting for further discussions on how best to introduce the new service with further announcements planned soon.

Bosses at the centre recently revealed £60,000 extension plans, which would increase facilities for local people and those visiting the hospital.

Mr Dodson said: “There is a growing Polish community in our area so we wanted to be able to offer them the ability to improve their English and maybe help people learn Polish in a two way process.”

The centre, which was built in 2003, provides activities and classes to improve peoples’ health including healthy cooking lessons, exercise classes and walks.

Volunteers are needed to work on the scheme, telephone the centre on 01948 666612 or e-mail info@whitchurch-hcc.org for details.
