The Mere visitor centre could be moved three and a half miles away in £30,000 plans to expand Wood Lane Nature Reserve.
The county council has approved plans for the extension of the reserve in Ellesmere after the Shropshire Wildlife Trust received a lottery grant.
Wood Lane Nature Reserve is part of a quarry site owned by building firm Tudor Griffith.
Parts of the site which are no longer quarried are managed by the trust and are used to teach children.
Wood Lane is one of the premier sites for birds in Shropshire with the biggest colony of sand martins in the county. It is also a popular site for fishing.
John Hughes, development manager at the Shropshire Wildlife Trust, said: “We received a development grant in May last year for developing a 20-year plan to bid for bits of the quarry as they become available.
“But we can only spend the money now as we were waiting for the restoration proposal by the quarry company to be approved by the county council,” he said.
“We’d like to work with the county council who received a lottery grant for educational activities at the Mere.
The Mere isn’t a very good site for safety reasons. We’re hoping that we get planning permission to move the visitor centre building to Wood Lane and turn it into a classroom.”
The Mere’s own visitor centre would be hosted inside the boathouse cafe.
As part of the planning stage the trust has sent out questionnaires to residents and users to find out their views..
One plan the trust is considering is charging visitors a £1 to use the car park.
Mr Hughes said: “We are trying to find out how do we sustain activity, how do we implement a charge?
“Charging for parking is the simplest way to do that, but if a lot of people come back strongly against that’s fine and we would have to think of other ways.”
