The North Shropshire Chronicle is looking for the greatest pets in our latest competition.

Pets can be nominated in five categories: Top Dog, Top Cat, Best Small Animal, Best Large Animal and Best Bird.

So if you think you have Prees’ perfect parrot, Hodnet’s handsomest horse, Cockshutt’s cutest cat or Whitchurch’s wonderful Westie then you could be in with a chance.

Each of the winners, chosen by a top panel of animal experts, will be awarded £50 worth of pet prizes each, as well as being featured in the Chronicle.

The following are offering prizes:

  • North Shropshire Chronicle will give a £50 cheque.
  • Leonard Brothers Veterinary Centre is offering £50 worth of prizes including booster injections, flea and worm treatment and bags of feed for cats, dogs and small animals.
  • Pets 2000 in Whitchurch is offering £50 gift vouchers for pet products available in their shop.
  • Grinshill Animal Rescue is sponsoring the Top Dog category and offering £50 worth of prizes including collars, leads, microchipping and other prizes.
  • Cats Protection Shrewsbury, based in Wem, are offering £50 worth of various goodies for pet and owner for the Top Cat category.

The competition judges include Steve Leonard, the celebrity vet and representatives from Grinshill Animal Rescue, Pets 2000 pet shop in Whitchurch and Shrewsbury Cat’s Protection in Wem. Any pet or an animal living in a rescue centre can be entered into the competition with the winners being informed on Thursday, April 24.

All you have to do to enter is post a photograph or e-mail us a jpeg picture of your pet and say in 50 words or less what you think makes them great. Entrants will be judged on the look of their pet and their owner’s reasons for entering them. Owners must also supply the name of their pet, their own name and a contact telephone number.

Over the next few weeks the Chronicle will be publishing the pets’ pictures and also be looking at some of the work done by people concerned with animal welfare as part of National Pet Month.

Competition entries can be e-mailed to ekasprzak @shropshirestar.co.uk or posted to Emma Kasprzak, Pet of the Year Competition, North Shropshire Chronicle, Chronicle House, Castle Foregate, Shrewsbury, SY1 2DN. The closing date for entrants is Friday, April 18.
