Closed loos a potential problem

People caught short while shopping have stopped visiting a market town after finding nowhere to spend a penny, it has been claimed.

Shoppers have been up in arms over the lack of toilet facilities in Wem after the public conveniences were closed due to a spate of vandalism.

The loos, in the Co-op car park, have been shut for around five weeks and now many people have vowed they will not return to the town until the toilets are re-opened.

Town and district councillor Peggy Carson told the Chronicle she has had many complaints. She said she was worried that as the Easter holidays approached the closed toilets could have a negative impact on the number of tourists visiting the town.

Councillor Carson has been talking to the district council for three weeks to try and see them re-opened, and has called for new vandal-proof toilets to be installed.

Rian Huxley, district council spokesman, said: “All being well the contractors have assured us the toilets in Wem will be open and usable by the end of the week.”
