Wem will be the location for more than 40 affordable homes after £2.5 million was given to north Shropshire.
A total of £12 million was awarded to Shropshire last week by the Housing Corporation to build 456 new affordable homes across the county by 2011.
Bosses from Meres and Mosses Housing Association have revealed they are to spend £2.5 million on building 40 rented and shared ownership houses within the town.
But Martin Holland, chief executive for Meres and Mosses Housing Association and South Shropshire Housing Association, is remaining tightlipped over the location of the new homes.
He said: “There is a site, subject to planning consent, in Wem for about 40 homes. I can’t discuss it as it is subject to planning consent.
“There will be a mixture of rented houses and shared ownership homes for first-time buyers. It will be a mixture of two or three bedroom homes.
Mr Holland said the need for housing was ‘a major problem across the county’.
Bromford Housing Group also confirmed this week that it had received £240,000 to build four homes for rent in Pepperstreet, Quina Brook, near Wem.
The association will provide two home ownership schemes for people with long-term disabilities as it rolls out a pilot project with further funding as part of its settlement.
Lance Gurney, on behalf of Bromford Housing Group, said the development in Quina Brook already had planning permission. Sites are yet to be finalised for the district’s two home ownership schemes.
“We have had a grant for £240,000 to provide four rented houses in Quina Brook and a further two under what we call Home Ownership for people with long-term disabilities who have some income and can afford to pay a mortgage,” he said.
“It is something which we have piloted and put out to the rest of the region. There will be two units in north Shropshire, two in south Shropshire and two in Shrewsbury and Atcham.”
Mr Gurney said the Pepperstreet homes would all have three bedrooms and house five people each.
“We have already got planning permission and work will hopefully start at Quina Brook in April,” he added.
