Chambers Restaurant, Shrewsbury

sd2530630sh28chambers-3.jpgAs soon as you enter the Chambers Restaurant, you somehow know that you are not going to be disappointed.

We were greeted on arrival and promptly taken to a very comfortable seating area in front of a roaring fire. We were provided with a drink and a copy of the menu to study at our own pace.

Chambers Restaurant is situated in one of Shrewsbury’s oldest Tudor buildings and clearly has character. It has interesting reminders of what the building was once used for, the judge’s chambers, these are displayed around the restaurant making the dining experience unique.

The restaurant serves food daily, seven days a week from 11.30am until 2.30pm weekdays, 3pm at weekends. Evening meals are served from 6pm till 11pm every day.

For starters we both opted for garlic mushrooms – fresh cup mushrooms sautéed in garlic and fresh herbs, topped with melted mozzarella cheese priced at £5.25.  For main course, I decided to sample the Chambers steak, mushroom and Guinness pie, a classic recipe cooked in a suet pastry served with olive oil mash and seasonal vegetables, and reasonably priced at £9.95.

My wife decided on the healthy option of grilled fillet of cod,  topped with herb breadcrumb crust, served with crushed potatoes and fresh tomato salsa and priced at £10.95.

Chambers offers a great selection of pastas, salads and main courses.

We were taken to our table, which looked very impressive, small touches such as our cutlery neatly wrapped in a napkin with ribbon tied in a bow made all the difference.

It was obvious Chambers already had a good reputation, diners who had not booked were being asked to call later as the restaurant was full – always a good sign.

Our starters arrived, a very generous portion of garlic mushrooms, which tasted delicious, complemented by the melted mozzarella cheese. The herbs provided even more flavour to the dish. A great start – we both couldn’t wait for the main course.

Our mains arrived, and it was obvious how much care and attention the chef had given to our dishes, if the taste was as good as the presentation then Chambers could achieve top marks.

My pie was quite possibly the finest I have tasted, and although extremely filling, every mouthful was indeed a pleasure. The mash and vegetables were cooked to perfection, top marks from me.

I have to say my wife’s cod also looked very impressive. She commented on how the fish simply fell apart as she cut into it, cooked to perfection and a great variety of flavours with the herb crumb crust and tomato salsa – she also gave top marks.

If you have suet pudding you will understand why I couldn’t manage a dessert. However, my wife had room to try the raspberry crème brulee with shortbread biscuit.

Ann was pleased with her choice – it had a crunchy, caramelised layer just how it should be served.

I would highly recommend a visit to Chambers Restaurant for a true dining experience. It offers atmosphere, character, outstanding service and fantastic cuisine.  If you want to impress a loved one or treat someone special, then this is the restaurant for you – enjoy!
