Villagers drive out firm

A company boss claims he has been forced out of a village after lorry drivers have been ‘frightened’ by people ‘gesturing’ at them.

Lee Gorton, director of EGS, said residents in Cockshutt were unhappy after the Wrexham company rented a warehouse at Crosemere about three months ago.

Mr Gorton said his distribution company had been renting the warehouse to store wood, but residents had become upset by the level of traffic.

He said lorry drivers had told him they felt intimidated by people gesturing at them as they drove past.

He has now informed parish councillors that the company will be leaving  in the summer.

He said: “We have been in touch with the parish council because people have been making a lot of kerfuffle about the fact that we have been storing wood there.

“I believe the residents are very unhappy with the level of traffic,” he said.

“The drivers are getting that much grief off the residents they are frightened to use the lane as people gesture at them.

“We have had a letter from the council telling us we are doing nothing wrong.

“The warehouse is for industrial use and that is exactly what we use it for.”

Mr Gorton said the company would be leaving the warehouse in June.

He said: “It will take us up to six months to empty the warehouse and we have taken on another place in Whitegate in Wrexham.

“I understand the residents’ point of view because they have bought houses in a high class area and then they have got 10 to 20 vehicles passing.

“It’s a shame. We are doing nothing wrong and this has taken away the chance of a few jobs.”

John Dickin, Cockshutt parish councillor, said: “The complaints came up at the last meeting. Villagers will be happy to hear the company is leaving. We are pleased that there is going to be less traffic, especially for the new residents.”
