Extension to Hospital Chapel

An extension costing more than £60,000 is in the pipeline for Whitchurch’s Hospital Chapel Centre.

The centre on Claypit Street offers informal help and activities to encourage healthy lifestyles to all age groups and abilities in the area.

Bosses at the centre believe it is now becoming so popular that they will soon be ‘bursting at the seams’ and hope the plans for a new extension will help them to extend the services they offer.

It’s hoped the extra space will allow the centre to be open for more hours and provide extra services, including a place for people to go and have a hot drink.

The chairman of the Hospital Chapel Centre, John Dodson, said the project could cost more than £60,000 and they were looking for help with funding. A planning application is yet to be submitted.

Mr Dodson said: “We have sent out letters seeking possible funding from local businesses.

“We have some plans because if we carry on like this we will be bursting at the seams.

“The extension will be like a giant conservatory and it will improve the facilities for people to pop in and have a cup of tea or coffee if they are at the hospital and waiting to see somebody. And we could have classes running together.

“At the moment we are operating in four days and we could extend to five.”

The centre, which was built in 2003, has also recently received a £15,000 grant from North Shropshire District Council to help with the running of the centre.

Ben Proctor, speaking for NSDC, said: “We have given the grant because the district wants to improve the quality of life in a number of ways and Whitchurch Hospital Chapel Centre are helping us with this.”
