Students in Wem are taking an active part in discussing plans on how to spend £20,000 of lottery money after meeting with town councillors.

Youngsters from Thomas Adams School have been consulting with the town council to see which items of equipment they would like to see bought with the cash from the Big Lottery Fund.

The money has been provisionally awarded to the town to equip Wem’s Recreation Ground with facilities for older children to use.

In order to receive the lottery cash the council was asked to consult with the youth of the area by BLF chiefs.

Discussions are still ongoing with the youngsters as to what items of equipment they would like to have.

Headteacher Neil Hemming said: “Students were invited to look at a selection of play equipment on plans which had been drawn up by the town council and then have their say by filling in a very simple questionnaire which enabled them to get their preference.”

Rian Huxley, spokesperson for North Shropshire District Council, said that a delegated decision was made on December 18 last year to allow permission for play equipment to be placed on the recreation ground in the town. There is now a three-year deadline for the equipment to be installed.

Jane Drummond, Wem Town Clerk, said: “The town council has provisionally been offered funding by the Big Lottery Fund to put some play equipment on the recreational ground for older children.

“The youngsters have a big part to play in this because as part of the conditions to receive the money we have to consult with the children.

“We want to put in the equipment they want.”
