Langmead ready to skipper

Langmead was handed the armband when Davies limped out of Tuesday’s remarkable 3-3 draw against MK Dons and responded by leading Town’s stunning revival, powerfully heading in their opening goal.

And with Davies a fitness doubt for this weekend as he strives to overcome a tight hamstring, Langmead insists he would be happy to fill in as skipper if he was asked by boss Gary Peters.

“I would be lying if I said no, but I want Benji to be out there for us,” said the consistent central defender. “He’s the captain and we just hope that his hamstring injury is not too bad.

“I hope Benji’s all right but we’ll have to wait and see if he’s okay for Saturday. Joe (Hinnigan) and Rachel (Greenley) will work hard to make sure that he’s right and that’s important.”

Langmead was greatly encouraged by Town’s stunning midweek fightback from 3-0 down to salvage a point against Paul Ince’s League Two leaders.

And he is refusing to concede defeat in the race for a play-off spot even though Town are currently 10 points off the pace in mid-table. “While it’s still mathematically possible, it’s something you’ve got to aim for,” he said.

“There’s no reason why we can’t go on a run like we did last year when we went 14 games unbeaten, and then you never know.”

But Langmead knows Town have to improve their modest record on their travels as he targets a fourth away win of the season at Morecambe, the last team Shrewsbury beat when they overcame Sammy McIlroy’s men 2-0 at Oteley Road on January 19.

“We’ve not had too many away victories this season, that’s been a problem for us, but we’ll go there really confident after Tuesday’s result and the way we played second half.

“But we’ve got to do that throughout the game and I’m sure if we do that, we’ll win.”

Langmead added Tuesday’s clash against MK Dons saw the two different sides to Shrewsbury as they initially struggled before roaring back in real style.

“We didn’t play well in the first half and it’s been that sort of season at times,” he said. “We need to play like we did in the second half all the time and we shouldn’t have to go 3-0 down to get that kind of performance.

“Of course, we understand when the fans get restless but one thing they can’t argue with is our commitment and desire to get back into the game.

“Everyone around the club, in the ground, even in the streets miles away, would have heard the roar when we equalised – it was unbelievable.

“To be 3-0 down and get anything from a game is always positive. We worked extremely hard in the second half and we deserve credit for that, but at half time we also deserved the boos because we weren’t good enough.

“You’ve got to take the highs and the lows and try and keep level-headed.”

Langmead added he was relieved to finally open his goal account for the season with his first since scoring Town’s last league goal at Gay Meadow against Grimsby last May.

“It’s about time I scored one,” he smiled. “It was pleasing and it definitely helped as we needed to get back into it before half time.

“James (Constable) then came up with two great finishes but that’s history now and we’ve got to move on to the next game.”

Guy Madjo is set to return to the starting line-up as Constable’s strike partner at Morecambe as Dave Hibbert serves a one-match ban.
