Organisers of a famous Ellesmere bike ride have axed the event because of a lack of support and volunteers.
The popular Mere Cycle Ride has been organised by the Ellesmere branch of the British Heart Foundation for nearly a decade and they have seen around 400 cyclists take part each year and £30,000 raised for the charity.
Last February the Chronicle reported that the event had been postponed for the first time in eight years due to a lack of support.
It was hoped the event would continue again this year but because of a repeat in low numbers of volunteers as well as health and safety concerns, the event has ended.
Barbara McBride, who has helped organise the event in past years, said: “We were up to 400/500 people coming to the event and it was quite famous.
“But we couldn’t get the numbers of helpers and volunteers so we have cancelled it.”
Mrs McBride said there may still be hope for the event if someone else would take on the project.
Ellesmere’s Town Mayor, Geoff Elner, said he was saddened to hear the news and hoped that someone would step forward to take on the event.
Claire Goodman, regional director, British Heart Foundation, said they were very grateful for all the work Mr and Mrs McBride had put into the past events.
