Grass verges get makeover

Grass verges in Whitchurch are the first in the county to be given £17,000 worth of reinforcement after a 10-year campaign.

Council officials are to spend £17,500 on plastic mesh to improve parking and prevent the verges being damaged in three of the town’s streets.

Shropshire County Council has agreed to use money budgeted to Action: Whitchurch, Prees and Surrounding Parishes to install GrasCrete in Thompson Drive, Queensway and Caldecott Crescent.

Grascrete, a mesh-like material, originates from America and is designed to reinforce grass verges for vehicles to park on.

Councillor Tom Biggins said he introduced the idea and had been pushing for GrasCrete for many years to get something done about the state of the town’s verges.

He said: “This is something I have been complaining about since residents brought it to my attention about 10 years ago. I am really delighted that at last there’s some progress on the issue.”

District councillor Gerald Dakin, who has also been involved, said: “I am delighted that we are finally tackling this problem.”

It’s hoped that the named areas will have the GrasCrete work completed by February and the council added: “A further GrasCrete programme will be possible in 2008/09.”

The council has also used the money to create a turning area at the far end of Caldecott Crescent.

The decision will be presented to the Action meeting tonight, Thursday, at Higher Heath Village Hall, from 7pm, with a panel of county, district, parish and town councillors.
