Peace-loving residents say their quiet weekends are being destroyed by the noise of scramble bikes using a field as a racetrack.
A field in ‘peaceful’ Bettisfield has become ‘hell’ after scramble bikers decided to hold weekend-long races, it has been claimed.
Ken Muir, a community councillor for Bettisfield, told the Chronicle he had received many complaints about the noise from villagers.
He said: “The noise is dreadful. They come on a Saturday and on Sundays now. They arrive about 11.30am until late afternoon and leave at about 4pm. They stay and rev up their motorbikes, it’s a nightmare.”
Mr Muir said the bikers first came to the village on November 10 and have been using the field most weekends.
He said: “They are using a field going on the northward road going out towards Wem.”
Mr Muir, along with other residents, believes that if this continues into the summer, villagers’ way of life could be destroyed.
He said: “We have double glazing throughout our house and we can still hear them.
“It affects our quality of life. We live in a village to be quiet. This is in the winter, can you imagine how it will be in the summer? It will be dreadful.”
The minutes of a Maelor South Community Council meeting, held on January 8 in Penley, read: “Planning enforcement officer at Wrexham, Fran Evans, told Mr Muir that the people organising the events were allowed to hold 14 events, after which they would have to apply for a licence.
“She asked Mr Muir to monitor the situation.”
Gill Stevens, a spokesperson for Wrexham County Borough Council, said: “I can confirm that we are aware of residents’ concerns and we are looking at the situation.”
The bikers were unavailable for comment as the Chronicle went to press.
